The movie, Send Help premiered this past Friday and I wanted to makes sure I enjoyed a movie outing. I know many people don't go to theaters to watch films these days, but it's a perfect getaway as I have so much room to enjoy a movie without people whispering a movie's plot in the back row. Besides, once those theater doors close behind me, I really become void from the reality of what's out in the real world. Especially these days, political upheaval, social pressures, and anything else that can get on my nerve. Movies has been an escape for me. Period. I'm old school.
When I read the movie summary and saw the trailer, I thought "oh, another Rom-Com". Boy was I mistaken. It was a good selection for a movie that weekend. Another movie called, Melania was being heavily promoted but received barely any fanfare, thank god! It was a political documentary on the current U.S. First Lady, Melania Trump. Another political annoyance. She ended up receiving over 25 million for the film whether it bombed or not, I'm glad it bombed! I digress.
Send Help is about a female employee, Linda Liddle played by Rachel Adams who has worked hard to get promoted in a company only to find out she did not get the promotion from her new boss, Bradley Preston played by Dylan O'Brien, who assumed the new role after his father who was CEO passed away. However, she did get an invitation to fly with the executive board to Thailand to make a presentation as a chance to prove her ability to lead. As you have it in the trailer, the plane crashes and both Adam and O'Brien characters survives and ends up on a deserted island and must survive until help arrives. That's my take on the story line, but here's my take after seeing this film. Without reading the premise, I really delved into this close to two hour film.
As I watched the film, I saw it initially as part "War of the Roses", part "Misery", part "Cast Away" films rolled up into one. Or certain aspects of it. I found it interesting. The Employee-Employer relationship, changes in the circumstances they are in. Individualism takes hold of each character, both hoping to have one over the other see their side of things.
It apparently becomes evident, (without giving the plot way) that what the audience was expecting to see i.e. maybe romance, change in personalities, morphed into a more sinister take from one of the characters.
You'll need to see the movie, but I thought it was a smart, relatable, and sympathetic film as people would be able to "get it" in terms of inequality, favoritism, and pure bad human behavior. It was worth my matinee ticket fee of $15. $15 right? That's not really a matinee price but the theater I was in had reclining seats and the sound system was manageable and enjoyable.
It was a nice break from the day to day living to just be away for a bit, somehow this film sort of brought everyone back to reality that old saying goes, "Life imitates Art". It made me think about my previous jobs, and what could have been done better or....you get the picture.
Overall, refreshing film, the ending doesn't always come out the way it should be and that's how it should be.
Paraphrasing one of the characters saying, "Remember, no will come to save or rescue you".
